? the perimeter is a linear measure. You can make any shape you want with the line, but as long as you are just measuring the length of the line, it will be just that, a linear measure.

The area is a two-dimensional measure, it's a shape where you are measuring not the line around it, but the area inside it. 
Since the area has two dimensions, you multiply one measure times the other, L*W. If the L and W are the same, as in a square, you can take the Side and square it.
