Question 1060240

I drove to my parents' house at 60 miles per hour. If I had driven 50 miles an hour instead, then I would have gotten there 40 minutes later. How many miles did I drive?
<pre>Let the distance be D
Then actual time taken = {{{D/60}}}
Hypothetical time: {{{D/50}}}
Note that 40 minutes = {{{matrix(1,4, 40/60, or, 2/3, hour)}}}
We then get the following TIME equation: {{{D/60 = D/50 - 2/3}}}
Solve for D, the distance
That's all...nothing complex!
Also, NO NEED TO find actual and/or hypothetical time. That's doing more work than is required, unless of course you like doing extra work.
