Question 1059972
A nozzle which is attached to the end of a 4-in fire hose has a length of 1 ft and a diameter at the discharge end of 1 in. If it has a uniform thickness of 5/16 in and is made of brass, find the weight of material used in the manufacture of 1000 such nozzles. (Brass weighs 520 lb per cu. ft)
--------
Some details are missing.
---
Assuming it's 2 concentric cones, and that the ID of the end on the hose is 4 inches:
--> 2 frustums (frusta?) of cones.
For the outside cone:
R = large end radius, r = small end radius
R = 2.3125, r = 0.8125 inches
----
Vol of the frustum = {{{(pi*h/3)*(R^2 + R*r + r^2)}}}
= {{{4pi*(2.3125^2 + 2.3125*0.8125 + 0.8125^2)}}}
= {{{4pi*7.8867}}} =~ 99.1074 cu inches
------
Subtract the volume of the inside frustum:
Vol = {{{4pi*(2^2 + 2*0.5 + 0.5^2)}}}
= 4pi*5.25 = 21pi =~ 65.973 cu inches
-----
33.134 cu inches
======================
1 cu ft = 1728 cu inches
Weight = (33.134/1728)*520
=~ 9.97 pounds
x1000 = 9970 pounds (with no scrap)
