Question 91834
Question:

Jaimie was trying to count the number of cookies at the party. One-half were chocolate chip, 12 were peanut butter, one-third were oatmeal. How many cookies did she count?

Answer:

Assume that,

Total number of cookies = x

Then number of chocolate chip = one-half of x = {{{x/2}}}

Peanut butter = 12

Oatmeal = one-third = {{{x/3}}}

As per the question,

{{{ x/2 + 12 + x/3 = x }}}

Multiply throughout with 6

==> {{{ 6* (x/2) + 6* 12 + 6*(x/3)  = 6 * x }}}

==> {{{ 3x + 72 + 2x = 6x}}}

==> {{{ 3x + 2x + 72  = 6x}}}

 ==> {{{ 5x + 72  = 6x}}}

Subtract 5x from both sides...

==> 5x + 72 - 5x   = 6x - 5x

==> 72 = x

That is ...

Total number of cookies = 72

Hope you found the explanation useful.
