Question 1050118
Hi there!
My question is: Find 83 2/3 % of 12.6
This website shows how to do this problem, but I am having trouble understanding it. Could anyone please break it down and explain step by step what the process is without the usage of a calculator.
It is example 4 on this page:
http://amby.com/educate/math/4-2_prop.html
What I don't understand most is how they got 126/10 and 251/3. Where are the denominators of those fractions coming from? I do know how 251 came about (from the 83 & 2/3). What I have done is set up my equation exactly like the site has however I thought you have to multiply 12.6 (251) divided by 100 to get x. Please help!
Thanks in advance!!

The already posted solution appears correct, so how it might be confusing is not too clear. Understand meaning of percent. Maybe use the fraction as its improper fraction form.

{{{(83&2/3)percentOf}}} 12.6, is what value?

That means {{{((83&2/3)/100)*12.6}}}, which is just the LITERAL translation.

{{{((83*(3/3)+2/3)/100)12.6}}}

{{{((249/3+2/3)/100)12.6}}},  fraction skills

{{{((251/3)/100)12.6}}}

and more fraction skills,
{{{(251*12.6)/(100*3)}}}, hoping not too hard to see that step

Try to simplify, but not easy to pick just how...
{{{(251*12.6)/(100*3)=(251/100)(12.6/3)}}}

{{{(251/100)(4.2)}}}

and you MIGHT want to do this as decimals to finish since LCD is either 10 or 100.

{{{(2.51)(4.2)}}}

{{{highlight(10.542)}}}, but did you want as a mixed number or improper fraction instead? Did you want it reduced?
