Question 88152

   In a town election, the winning candidate had 220 more votes
than the loser. If 810 votes were cast in all, how many votes did each candidate
receive?

  Total votes cast = 810
  Let the number of votes obtained by the loser = x
     the number of votes obtained by the winner = x+220
      therefore the number of votes = sum of votes obtained by (winner+loser)
                                810 = x+x+220
                             810-220 = 2x
                                 590 = 2x
                                   x = 590/2 = 295
                                 x+220 = 295+220 = 515
        The number of votes obtained by the loser = 295
        The number of votes obtained by the winner = 515
