Question 88136

    one side of a rectangle is 3 less than the other side and the perimeter is 54 inches long what are the dimensions of the rectangle?

  Let the length of the rectangle be = l = x inc
      the width of the rectangle will be = b = x-3 inc
          perimeter of the rectangle is = p = 54 inc

                                  p = 2(l+b)
                                 54 = 2(x+x-3)
                                 54/2 = 2x-3
                                 27 = 2x-3  or  27+3 = 2x  i.e, 2x = 30
                                                                 x= 30/2 = 15

        length of the rectangle  = l = 15 inch
        width of the rectangle   = b = 15-3 = 12 inch
