Question 87487
Let x=price of a loaf of bread
And y=cost of a jar of peanut butter

Now we are told that:

3x+2y=$5.49-------------------------------------------------eq1

We are also told that:

4x+3y=$7.75--------------------------------------------------eq2

multiply each term in eq1 by 3 and we get:

9x+6y=$16.47----------------------------------eq1a

multiply each term in eq2 by 2 and we get:

8x+6y=$15.50----------------------------------eq2a

subtract eq2a from eq1a and we have:

x=$0.97--------------------------------price of a loaf of bread

substitute x=$0.97 into eq1 and we have:

3($0.97)+2y=$5.49 get rid of parens

$2.91+2y=$5.49 subtract $2.91 from both sides

$2.91-$2.91+2y=$5.49-$2.91 collect like terms

2y=$2.58 divide both sides by 2

y=$1.29-----------------------------------price of a jar of peanut butter

CK

from eq1:

3($0.97)+2($1.29)=$5.49
$2.91+$2.58=$5.49
$5.49=$5.49

from eq2

4($0.97)+3($1.29)=$7.75

$3.88+$3.87=$7.75

$7.75=7.75

Hope this helps---ptaylor
