a rectangular field is 6 times as long as it is wide
Make the width = x
Length = 6x
if the length is decreased by 4m and the width is 
increased by 2m, 
Length = 6x - 4   Width = x + 2
the perimeter will be 52m.  
Perimeter = 2(Width) + 2(Length)
52 = 2(x + 2) + 2(6x - 4)
52 = 2x + 4 + 12x - 8
Collect like terms
2x + 12x = 52 - 4 + 8
14x = 56
x = 4
Dimensions of original field:
Width = 4m
Length = 24m
