Question 85989

Let x=number of lbs of walnuts needed

Total cost of walnuts=$1.40x

Total cost of gourmet chips=$2.60*3

Total cost of final mixture $1.76(3+x)

Now we know that the total cost of walnuts ($1.40x) plus total cost of gourmet chips ($2.60*3) must equal the total cost of the final mixture ($1.76(3+x)). So our equation to solve is:

$1.40x+$2.60*3=$1.76(3+x) get rid of parens

$1.40x+$7.80=$5.28+$1.76x subtract $1.76x and also $7.80 from each side of the equation

$1.40x+$7.80-$7.80-$1.76x=$5.28+$1.76x-$1.76x-$7.80 collect like terms

-$0.36x=-$2.52 divide both sides by -$0.36

x=7 lb ------------------------number of lbs of walnuts

ck

7*$1.40+3*$2.60=$1.76*10

$9.80+$7.80=$17.60
$17.60=$17.60
