Question 12175
If you really don't like fractions, and most people DON'T, you might want to multiply both sides of this equation by 2 and clear the fractions:

{{{ 5 - (1/2)*(x-6) = 4}}}

{{{2* 5 - 2*(1/2)*(x-6) = 2*4}}}
{{{10 -(x-6) = 8}}}
{{{10-x + 6 = 8}}}
{{{16 - x = 8}}}

Subtract 16 from each side:
{{{16-16-x = 8 - 16}}}
{{{-x = -8}}}

Divide both sides by -1
{{{x = 8}}}

Check in the original equation:
{{{ 5 - (1/2)*(x-6) = 4}}}
{{{5 - (1/2)* (8-6) = 4}}}
{{{ 5 - (1/2)*2 = 4 }}}
{{{ 5 - 1 = 4}}}
It checks.
