Your simplification is correct, *[tex \Large \log(10)^{3k}\ =\ 3k] IF you are using the convention that an unspecified base implies base 10.  That is not universally true, by the way.  Some authors write *[tex \Large \log] to mean *[tex \Large \ln], for example.
