m&#8736;X is just a number.  So  m&#8736;A + m&#8736;B = m&#8736;B + m&#8736;C is no different than saying *[tex \Large x\ +\ y\ =\ y\ + z].  If you add *[tex \Large -y] to both sides of the equation you get *[tex \Large x\ =\ z]
