Question 986953
At first an athlete jogs at 5 miles per hour and then jogs at 8 miles per hour, traveling 12 miles in 1.8 hours.
 How long does the athlete jog at each speed? (Hint: Let t represent the amount of time the athlete jogs at 5 mph. Then 1.8 -t represents the amount of time the athlete jogs at 8 mph.)
:
Write a distance equation; dist = speed * time
dist@5 + dist@8 = 12 miles
5t + 8(1.8-t) = 12
5t + 14.4 - 8t = 12
5t - 8t = 12 - 14.4
-3t = -2.4
t = {{{(-2.4)/(-3)}}}
t = .8 hrs at 5 mph
I'll let you find how long at 8 mph
:
The athlete jogged ____ hour(s) at a speed of 5 miles per hour and ____ hour(s) at a speed of 8 miles per hour. (Type integers or decimals.)
