Write your expression in pencil. Every place you see an *[tex \Large x] in your expression, erase the *[tex \Large x] and write a *[tex \Large 4] in its place. Every place you see a *[tex \Large y], replace it with *[tex \Large (-2)]. The parentheses make certain that you apply the exponent to the negative sign as well as the *[tex \Large 2] in each case.

Now just do the arithmetic.
