Remove the absolute value bars, and then solve the resulting quadratic equation.  If you find that you have real roots, test each into the equation with the absolute value bars.  Any real number that makes a true statement when substituted for the independent variable in the original equation is an element of the solution set.  If a number substituted creates a false statement, then that number is not an element of the solution set.
