Question 956415
Two baseball players hit 14 home runs combined last season. The first player hit 5 more home runs than twice the number of home runs the second player hit. How many home runs did each player hit? I do not understand how to convert this math question from word form to problem form.
----
Equation:
a + b = 14 home runs
a = 2b+5
------
Substitute for "a" and solve for "b"::
2b+5 + b = 14
3b = 9
b = 3 (# of homeruns hit by "b")
-----
Solve for "a"::
a + 3 = 14
a = 11 (# of homeruns hit by "a")
