Question 949128

Hello,
My math problem is: 12x + 131 = 189 + 3x
It is telling me to solve the problem and check it.
My answer is: x = 6 4/9
It is correct but when I do the checking, I can't seem to get it right? My answer for the check part:
12(6 4/9) + 131 = 189 + 3( 6 4/9)
77 22/3 + 131 = 189 + 19 1/3
But my score book says the right answer is:12(6 4/9) + 131 = 189 + 3( 6 4/9)
72 48/9 + 131 = 189 + 18 12/9
Please someone help? What am I doing wrong? Thank-you! I'm very confused.
<pre>{{{12(6&4/9)}}} = 12(6) = 72, and {{{12(4/9) = 48/9}}}
Therefore, {{{12(6&4/9)}}} = {{{72 + 48/9}}}, or {{{72&48/9}}}

If you'd done the correct calculations, you'd have gotten: {{{72&16/3}}}, which is the same as {{{72&48/9}}}, leading to:
{{{72&16/3 + 131 = 189 + 19&1/3}}}
Continue with this, and you should get a TRUE equation.

OR

For the check, you could use the IMPROPER FRACTION {{{58/9}}} as opposed to the mixed number, {{{6&4/9}}}
Therefore, you'd get: {{{12(58/9) + 131 = 189 + (58/9)}}}
{{{4cross(12)(58/3cross(9)) + 131 = 189 + cross(3)(58/3cross(9))}}}
{{{4(58)/3 + 131 = 189 + 58/3}}}
{{{232/3 + 131 = 189 + 58/3}}}
{{{232/3 + 393/3 = 567/3 + 58/3}}} ------ Multiplying by LCD, 3
232 + 393 = 567 + 58 ------- Simplifying NUMERATORS since all denominators are equal
625 = 625 (TRUE)
