Question 929554

The length of a rectangle is 6 more than two times a number. The width is the number plus three and the area is 32. What is the width of the rectangle?
<pre><font face = "Tohoma" size = 4 color = "indigo"><b>Let number be N
Then length = 2N + 6, and width = N + 3
Since area = 32, then we get: (2N + 6)(N + 3) = 32
{{{2N^2 + 12N + 18 = 32}}} ------- FOILing left side
{{{2N^2 + 12N + 18 – 32 = 0}}}
{{{2N^2 + 12N - 14 = 0}}}
{{{2(N^2 + 6N - 7) = 2(0)}}} ------- Factoring out GCF, 2
{{{N^2 + 6N - 7 = 0}}}
(N - 1)(N + 7) = 0
N = 1				OR			   N = - 7 (ignore)
Width: 1 + 3, or {{{highlight_green(4)}}} units
You can do the check!!
