Question 77712

Let x=the number
(1/3)x=1/3 of the number
(1/6)x=1/6 of the number, and

Now we are told that:

(1/3)x-2=(1/6)x multiply every term by 6 to get rid of fractions

(1/3)(6)(x)-2(6)=(1/6)(6)x  simplify

2x-12=x subtract 2x from both sides

2x-2x-12=x-2x
-12=-x  or
x=12------------------------------------------------ans

CK

(1/3)x=(1/3)(12)=4
(1/6)x=(1/6)(12)=2

And 4 is two more than 2

2nd Problem:

Stephanie:

Distance (D) equals Rate (R) times Time(T) or D=RT; R=D/T; T=D/R

Wally

Distance (d) equals Rate (r) times Time (t) or d=rt; r=d/t; t=d/r

Now I believe we are told that:

T=t
T=D/R and
t=d/r

equating these two equations, we get:

D/R=d/r multiply both sides by Rr to get rid of fractions

(D/R)(Rr)=(d/r)(Rr)  simplify

Dr=dR
