Question 914766
1.Alex’s father is five more than twice as old as he is now. Six years ago, he was one-third as old. How old are they now?

Let son's age be x
Father's age = 5+2x

6 years ago

son's age = x-6
Father's age = (2x+5)-6 = 2x-1

1/3(2x-1) =(x-6)

2x-1=3(x-6)
2x-1=3x-18
x=17
Son's age =17 years
father's age = 5+2x => 5+17*2=39 years

2.Two cars traveled the same distance. Car A traveled at 50 miles per hour and car B at 60 miles per hour. It took car A 50 minutes longer to make a trip. How long did it take car B to make the same trip?

since distance traveled is same

d= rt
rt for both is same

let car be take x hours
car A takes x+ 5/6 hours

50(x+5/6) = 60x
50(6x+5)/6 = 60x
50(6x+5)=360x
300x+250=360x
60x=250
6x=25
x= 4.16

4 hours 10 minutes
