Question 77090
Science and technology. Fungicides account for 1/10 of the pesticides used in the United States. Insecticides account for 1/4 of all the pesticides used in the United States. The ratio of fungicides to insecticides used in the United States can be written 1/10 divided by 1/4. Write the ratio in simplest form.
One way to do this is to remember that when you divide by a fraction you flip the second fraction over and multiply:
{{{(1/10)(4/1)}}}
{{{(1*4)/(10*1)}}}
{{{4/20}}}
{{{2*2/(2*5)}}}
{{{cross(2)*2/(cross(2)*5)}}}
{{{highlight(2/5)}}}
:
If you are supposed to be working with complex fractions, you multiply the top and bottom fractions by the LCD of both fractions, 20.
{{{(1/10)/(1/4)}}}
{{{20(1/10)/(20(1/4))}}}
{{{(2/1)/(5/1)}}}
{{{highlight(2/5)}}}
