Yesterday, on December 31st, Mary happily proclaimed she was 8.
Today is January 1st, and Mary is still 8, but she will be 9 this year (if only for 1 day of this year).
She will be 9 on December 31st of this year,
and next year, on December 31st, Mary will be happily saying that she is 10, and singing the joys of reaching a double-digit age.
