Question 76562
<pre>
Please help me work out and graph y = 2x + 1/x -1

Assume 3 values of x which is less than 1 and 3 values greater than 1 then solve for y by substituting the assumed values to the equation.

   x = 0              x = -1          x = -3

  2x + 1              2x + 1         2x + 1
__________          _________       _________
   x - 1               x - 1          x - 1

 2(0) + 1            2(-1) + 1        2(-3) + 1
__________          __________      __________
   0 - 1               -2 -1           -4 - 1

    1                   -1                -5
   ___ or -1          _____ or 1/3      ____ or 1
   -1                   -3                -5

  x = 2              x = 4            x = 6

  2x + 1              2x + 1         2x + 1
__________          _________       _________
   x - 1               x - 1          x - 1

 2(2) + 1            2(4) + 1        2(6) + 1
__________          __________      __________
   2 - 1               4 -1           6 - 1

    5                  9                13
   ___ or 5          _____ or 3        ____
    1                  3                5

Then plot the points. we have six points.

The graph looks like this :

{{{graph (400, 400, -6, 8, -7, 9, (2x+1)/(x-1))}}}

Notice that the graph did not pass x = 1
