Question 895036
The supplement of an angle y measures 10x+4 and the complement of the angle measures 4x. What is the measure of angle y? The answer is 32.7 degrees. I don't know how they came to that answer.

-I tried taking the 10x+4-y=180. But after subtracting and getting like numbers on their respective sides I end up with x-y=17.6. This is where I'm stuck. The back of the book states that the answer is supposed to be 32.7 degrees. ??? Help Please!!!
<pre>
Since angle y’s supplement is: 10x + 4, then y = 180 – (10x + 4), or y = 180 – 10x – 4, or y = 176 – 10x
Since angle y’s complement is: 4x, then y = 90 – 4x
Since y = 176 – 10x, and y also = 90 – 4x, then we can say that:
176 – 10x = 90 – 4x
– 10x + 4x = 90 – 176
- 6x = - 86
x = {{{(- 86)/- 6}}}, or {{{43/3}}}, or {{{14&1/3}}}

Since {{{x = 43/3}}}, then this value can be substituted in any of the y-equations to determine the value of y.
Using the 2nd y-equation (easier of the 2): y = 90 – 4x, we now have:
{{{y = 90 - 4(43/3)}}} ------ Substituting {{{43/3}}} for x
{{{y = 90 - 172/3}}}
{{{y = 270/3 - 172/3}}}
y = {{{98/3}}}, or {{{y = 32&2/3}}}, or y = 32.66666 &#8776; {{{highlight_green(32.7^o)}}}
