Question 75534
{{{y=-3x+6x-1}}}
.
Before beginning on the x-y table, note that there are two terms on the right side of this
equation that can be combined because they both contain and x. When you combine the -3x
with the +6x the resulting equation is:
.
{{{y = +3x - 1}}}
.
Now you can create an x-y table by assigning values to x and calculating the corresponding
values for y.
.
Let's try a simple one first ... assign x to = 0. Then the x term goes to zero and you
are left with y = -1.
.
Make your x-y table have two columns. Head the first column (left column) "When x equals",
and head the second column (right column) "Then y equals".
.
Our first entry is 0 in the left column and just to the right of it -1 in the right hand
column and draw a line under these entries.
.
Let x = 5.  Then y becomes {{{3*5 -  1}}} which equals {{{15 - 1 = 14}}}. So this time
in the left column enter 5 and adjacent to it in the right column enter 14.
.
One last one.  Let x = 10. Then y becomes {{{3*10 -  1}}} which equals {{{30 - 1 = 29}}}. So
this time enter 10 in the left column and enter 29 in the adjacent right column.
Draw a line
under these two entries and horizontally across the two columns of the table.
.
You now should do some additional values. Try some negative values for x and calculate
the corresponding values for y. Enter the x values you decide to use and list them vertically
in the left column. Across from each one that you enter, give the corresponding y-value in
the right hand column. Then draw an underline after each x and y entry.
.
Hope this helps you with understanding how x-y tables are developed.
