Question 890849
On a road map with a scale of 1/4 inch per 10 miles, the highway from
Waukee to Winterset is 1 3/8 inches long. How many miles long is
this highway?

------------

This problem can be solved using ratios.
So we set up the ratios:
{{{ ((1/4)inch) / 10 miles }}} = {{{ (1*(3/8)) inches / x miles }}}

Cross multiply:

(1 3/8)*(10) = (1/4)*(x)

I'm going to change this to decimals so that it's easier to put into a calculator.

(1.375)(10)=(0.25)(x)

13.75=0.25x

Divide it all by 0.25

x=55

The highway between Waukee to Winterset is 55 miles.
