Katie has a collection of nickels, dimes and quarters with a total value of $3.75. There are 6 more dimes than nickels and 3 more quarters than nickels, how many of each coin does she have?

Let number of nickels be N
Then number of dimes = N + 6, and number of quarters = N + 3
We then have: .05(N) + .1(N + 6) + .25(N + 3) = 3.75
.05N + .1N + .6 + .25N + .75 = 3.75
.05N + .1N + .25N + .6 + .75 = 3.75
.4N + 1.35 = 3.75
.4N = 3.75 - 1.35
.4N = 2.4
N, or number of nickels = {{{2.4/.4}}}, or {{{highlight_green(highlight_green(6))}}}. 
From this, I would think that you should be able to determine the number of dimes and quarters.
You then do a check!!
