Question 881235

The sum of two positive numbers is 36 and twice the first number added to their product is 224. Find the numbers (they are not necessarily integers).

I am trying to find out how to write this as an equation so it can be solved?
<pre>
Let the first number be F
Then 2nd is: 36 – F
Therefore, 2F + F(36 – F) = 224
{{{2F + 36F - F^2 = 224}}}
{{{F^2 - 38F  + 224 = 0}}}
Solve this quadratic to get TWO VALUES for the first number. Then determine the TWO VALUES for the 2nd number.

Then do a check!!

If you need a complete and detailed solution, let me know!!
