Question 877024

A rectangular window pane is 12 square feet. The width of the window pane is 1 foot less than its length. What is the width of the window pane?
<pre>
Let width be W
Then length = W + 1
Therefore, W(W + 1) = 12
{{{W^2 + W - 12 = 0}}}
(W - 3)(W + 4) = 0
W, or width = {{{highlight_green(3)}}} feet          OR         W  = - 4 (ignore)
You can do the check!!
