Question 73724
I dont understand rational expression with extraneous values.
----------
Let's say you have rational expression (x^2+6x+5)/(x+1) = 0

This fraction is zero only when the numerator is zero.
So you set the numerator equal to zero and proceed to solve for "x".
x^2+6x+5 = 0
You factor to get:
(x+1)(x+5)=0
Then x=-1 or x=-5
You think you have two solutions but you check them and find:
If x=-1 you get [(-1)^2+6*(-1)+5] / (-1+1)= 0/0 which is undefined.
so x=-1, which you thought was a solution, is not a solution . It is extraneous.
