Question 73273
{{{log(10000) = y}}}
.
On most scientific calculators ($10 variety) you would just enter 10,000 and press the "log" key
to get the answer of 4.
.
This problem you can probably work in your head. Talk yourself through the problem this
way:
.
The base is 10 so what exponent (call it y) do I have to raise 10 to in order to get 10,000?
.
you know that {{{10^1 = 10}}} and {{{10^2 = 100}}} and you probably know that {{{10^3 = 1000}}}
so you can probably quickly figure out that {{{10^4 = 10000}}}. From this you can see that the
exponent to make 10,000 from 10 is 4 and this is exactly what your calculator is telling you.
.
If you have a graphing calculator, you will need to do this a different way. Read your
instruction book, and try it ... but you now know that the answer you should get is +4.
