Question 865056

The length of a rectangle is 1 cm less than twice the width. The area is 45cm^2. what are the dimensions of the rectangle?
<pre>
Let width be W
Then length is 2W - 1
Area: W(2W - 1) = 45
{{{2W^2 - W - 45 = 0}}}
{{{2W^2 - 10W + 9W - 45 = 0}}}
{{{2W(W - 5) + 9(W - 5) = 0}}}
(W - 5)(2W + 9) = 0

W, or width = {{{highlight_green(5)}}}         OR           2W = - 9 (ignore)
Length = 2(5) - 1, or {{{highlight_green(9)}}}

You can do the check!!
