(-4, 8) actually has several meanings in math.  The most common meaning, when dealing with two variables (like a graph with x and y), the first number is x and the second number is y.


There are other meanings such as, when there is only one variable involved, a method of describing an interval of numbers on the numberline.  This is called "interval notation," and (-4, 8) in this case means all values of x on the numberline between -4 and 8, but not including either endpoint.  


How do you know the difference?  ANSWER:  The CONTEXT of the problem.
