Hi,
one number is three times as large as another smaller number X.
⇒ the Larger number is 3X
It is common to express one number in terms of another.
For Ex
one number is 5 more than another number X
⇒ Larger number is X + 5
As it goes... problem may read:
one number is 5 more than another number X and their sum is 15
X + X + 5 = 15    Combining Like Terms (subtracting 5 from both sides of = sign)
2X = 10    (Dividing both sides by 2)
  X = 5, the smaller number. The larger number is 10
