Hi,
the ratio of the length of a rectangle to its width is 5:3.
the width is 16 inches shorter than the length {{{highlight_green(x)}}}.
{{{5/3 = x/(x-16)}}}            Cross Multiplying to solve
5(x-16) = 3x
 5x - 80 = 3x
    2x = 80
     x = 40in, the length.  The width is 24in     {{{40-16}}}
   Note: {{{40/24 = 5/3}}}
  A = (40in)(24in) = 960 in^2
