Question 842067

Previous tutor said it equals -14. The book and calculator says the answer is 0. Help needed. 12+8 radical 81 divided by (-6)

---------------------------------------------

I know this probably isn't much help but I'm going to explain it as best as I can.

----------------------------------
1.) Depending on how you enter the equation into your calculator it can effect the answer.

I used the following:

{{{(12+8sqrt(81))/(-6)}}}

and got 0 as my answer.

***However, when I used <b>parenthesis</b> like this:

{{{((12+8sqrt(81)))/(-6)}}}

I got -14

------------------------------------------
2.) If we were to do the calculations just one by one this is what I would do.

{{{((12+8sqrt(81)))/(-6)}}}

{{{((12+8(9)))/(-6)}}}

{{{((12+72))/(-6)}}}

{{{((12+72))/(-6)}}}

{{{(84)/(-6)}}}

= -14

----------------------------------------
3.) As you can see I got -14 too. Perhaps the book has a typo...
