Question 827976

Usesubstitution to solve the system of linear equations.

x+4y=-6
x=5-(y/3)

What is the intersection?
<pre>
{{{system (x + 4y = - 6______eq_(i),
     x = 5 - (y/3)______eq_(ii))}}}
    {{{5 - (y/3) + 4y = - 6}}} ------ Substituting {{{5 - (y/3)}}} for x in eq (i)
15 - y + 12y = - 18 ----- Multiplying by LCD, 3
   - y + 12y = - 18 - 15
         11y = - 33
          {{{y = - 33/11}}}, or {{{highlight_green(- 3)}}}
  x + 4(- 3) = - 6 ------- Substituting - 3 for y on eq (i)
         x - 12 = - 6
             {{{highlight_green(x = 6)}}}
You can do the check!!
