Distance equals rate times time.  Let the time allowed be *[tex \Large t] hours, hence the total travel time is *[tex \Large t\ +\ 0.5] hours because he was 1/2 hour late.  Hence the total distance is:

If you expected a specific answer, then you left out part of the problem.
