Hi,
re reply:  Great idea!
Yes, the "fraction" 1/33 says the oil is 1/33 of the entire mixture
The 2 gal mixture was 32 parts gasoline to 1 part oil.
How much gasoline must be added to bring the mixture to
40 parts gasoline and 1 part oil?
(32:1 does not say there is 32% gas)
the Oil as a % is easier to work with: 1/33 0r 1/41
As You had let x represent gas added
 {{{(1/33)2 = (1/41)(2+x)}}}  |Cross Multiplying to solve
 {{{2*41 = 33(2+x)}}}
  {{{(82-66)/33 = x}}}
