Question 807992
A farmer has 800 yd of fencing to enclose a rectangular pasture.
 Since one side of the pasture borders a river, that side does not need to be fenced.
The side parallel to the river must be twice as long as the side perpendicular to the river.
 Find the dimensions of the rectangular pasture.
:
Let x = the length of the two sides perpendicular to the river
Then
2x = the length of the side parallel to the river
:
A simple equation
2x + x + x = 800
4x = 800
x = 800/4
x = 200 yds is the shorter side (perpendicular to the river)
and
2(200) = 400 yds is the side parallel to the river
