Question 68125
Let x=cost of Chocolate bars
And y=cost of gum

3x+y=$1.75--------------------eq (1)
2x+4y=$2.00-------------------eq (2)

From eq (1), we see that y=1.75-3x; substitute this into (2)

2x+4($1.75-3x)=$2.00 clear parens

2x+$7.00-12x=$2.00 subtract 7.00 from both sides:

-10x=-$7.00+$2.00
-10x=-$5.00
x=$0.50-------------cost of Chocolate bars

substitute x=$0.50 into eq (1):

3($0.50)+y=$1.75

$1.50+y=$1.75 subtract $1.50 from both sides:

y=$0.25-----------------------------------------cost of gum

ck

3($0.50)+$0.25=$1.75
$1.75=$1.75

and

2($0.50)+4($0.25)=$2.00

$1.00+$1.00=$2.00
$2.00=$2.00

Hope this helps-----ptaylor
