Question 788148

Direction_________rate__________time_____________distance
going_____________70____________x________________70x
returning_________60____________y________________60y
Total___________________________35

Each distance is the same, so {{{7x=6y}}}.
The total time was {{{x+y=35}}}.
That's your system. Solve it.

NOTE: The way I setup the data, the TIME quantities are the variables. This problem could have been analyzed using the distance as the variable. Doing it like that would make us use {{{time=distance/rate}}}. We would then formulate that {{{d/70+d/60=35}}} which uses d as the unknown distance either direction. Maybe this would be easier? Depends on who is solving the problem and which way he sees as easiest to arrange.
