Question 67233
On the 36-mile trip to the magic fountain, alice walked at a brisk pace. On the way back, alice doubled her pace. If the total trip took 6 hours, how fast did alice travel on the trip to the magic fountain and on the return trip from the magic fountain?
---------------------
To the fountain DATA:
distance= 36 miles; rate = x ; time= d/r= 36/x hrs.
-----------------
Trip from the fountain DATA:
distance= 36 miles; rate = 2x ; time = d/r = 36/2x = 18/x hrs
---------
EQUATION:
time to + time from = 6 hrs
36/x + 18/x = 6
54/x=6
x=9 mph (rate to the fountain)
2x=18 mph (rate from the fountain)
