When the sum of 648 and three times a positive number is subtracted from the &lt;font size=5&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;u&gt;square&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/u&gt; of the number, the result is 162. Find the number.

I tried to work through this but i ended up getting where i needed to square root a negative fraction, which isn&#39;t possible. Maybe i didn&#39;t write the equation right, but this is what i came up with from the question that&#39;s asked.

NO!  It&#39;s &lt;font size=5&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;u&gt;square&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/u&gt;, not SQUARE ROOT!!!

x² - (648 + 3x) = 162

Simplify then solve this as a quadratic.  You will get 
two answers, one is positive and one is negative.  You 
will discard the negative one and the positive answer
is the only solution.
