Question 776966

can you show me step by step on how to solve this : |x-3|= 2x

|x - 3| = 2x

Either x - 3 = 2x__________________OR__________________x - 3 = - 2x

Either x - 2x = 3__________________OR__________________x + 2x = 3

Either  - x = 3____________________OR__________________3x = 3

Either x = - 3_____________________OR__________________x = {{{3/3}}}, or 1

Checking by substituting - 3, we find that - 3 is an EXTRANEOUS solution as {{{6 <> - 6}}}

Substituting 1 in the original absolute-value equation though yields a true statement. Therefore, {{{highlight_green(x = 1)}}}

You can do the check!!
