Question 776865

The question asks to solve the problem using the square root method: (x-1)^2=16
I have already attempted to solve for it but I did it two ways and would like to know if they are correct since I get two different answers.
(x-1)^2=16
Sq.rt(x-1)^2=+/-sq.rt 16
x-1=+ or - 4
x=+/-5
and this is the second way I tried to solve it
x^2-1=16
Sq.rt x^2=Sq.rt17
x=+/-sq.rt 17

{{{highlight_green(x = 5_or_- 3)}}}

You can do the check!!
