Question 773225

I need help with a few questions. I don't understand how to solve this. 'Multiplying a certain even number by 4 then subtracting 16 gives you the next consecutive even number. Find the original number.' Please explain to me if you can how I am suppose to even start off on solving this. I am very confused. Thank you!

Let original number be N
Then NEXT CONSECUTIVE EVEN NUMBER = N + 2

4N equates to: “Multiplying a certain even number by 4”
– 16 equates to: “then subtracting 16”
= N + 2 equates to: “gives you the next consecutive even number”

Putting it all together, we get: 4N - 16 = N + 2

Solving this equation, we get:
4N – N = 2 + 16
3N = 18

N, or original even number = {{{18/3}}}, or {{{highlight_green(6)}}}

You can do the check!!
