Question 772247
<font face="Times New Roman" size="+2">

Yes and no. "5 plus x multiplied by 7" is ambiguous and could mean either "the quantity 5 plus x, multiplied by 7" which would be rendered *[tex \LARGE 7(5\ +\ x)] or "5 plus the quantity x multiplied by 7" which would be rendered as *[tex \LARGE 5\ +\ 7x]. So the answer to the question posed depends on whether the student is incorrectly asserting that *[tex \LARGE 5\ +\ 7x] is the ONLY way to symbolically express the statement *[tex \LARGE 5\ +\ 7x], or if the student is correctly asserting that *[tex \LARGE 5\ +\ 7x] is an alternative to *[tex \LARGE 7(5\ +\ x)] as a way to represent "5 plus x multiplied by 7" because of the aforementioned ambiguity.
