Question 763755

One number is 1 less than a second number. Twice the second number is
20 less than 4 times the first. Find the two numbers? I can never figure out how to set these equations up, could you show me the proper steps. Thank you very much.

Let the smaller, or first number be S

Then larger or second number = S + 1

Therefore, 2(S + 1) = 4S - 20

2S + 2 = 4S - 20

2S - 4S = - 20 - 2

- 2S = - 22

S, or smaller/first number = {{{(- 22)/- 2}}}, or {{{highlight_green(11)}}}

Larger/second number = S + 1, or {{{highlight_green(12)}}}

You can do the check!!
